Learn Social Media Marketing for business step by step in this new, 2019 book on social media by Jason McDonald. Used in his classes at Stanford Continuing Studies, the Social Media Marketing Workbook has become a beloved classic among small business owners and marketing managers. Why? The reason is that this is one of the best selling social media marketing books, one that lays it out clearly step-by-step. The book begins with content marketing, proceeds through each major platform (such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and YouTube) and helps you to make a plan for how to market a business on social media.
The book is based on an analogy – that social media is like a party and that you are the ‘party thrower.’ You need content just as you’d need food and entertainment, you need a promotion strategy just as you’d need invitations, and you need a systematic understanding of each social platform, just as you’d need a lot of technical knowledge to throw a great wedding or a great corporate meet-and-greet. Indeed, you’ll be throwing a ‘party with a purpose,’ using social media marketing to build your brand and ultimately sell more stuff.
Compare the Social Media Marketing Workbook to other books out there on the topic. It plays well with Social Media Marketing for Dummies, for example, and is an excellent companion to more conceptual books like Crushing It or Building a StoryBrand. It’s the perspiration to their inspiration. It’s the zig to their zag, and it’s a book that gives you more than 500 social media marketing tips. It provides practical, hands-on knowledge for 2018 and 2019.
Got questions? Just Google the author, Jason McDonald, and send him a quick email or message. The book includes massive links, videos, resources, and an amazing companion toolbook with free social media tools. It’s a must buy book.

Great for beginners, but that’s about it. Apparently there is a rebate offer inside this book for writing a review of this book. The nice thing though, is it doesn’t have to be good. You get the rebate regardless. So, I’ll give it to you straight up:Pros:The book is easy to follow. It’s great for beginners (if you are a beginner that’s a pro)It covers the main social platforms of todayThere are a lot of noted resources for supportCons:The book is only the basicsThe book does not dive into how to make money using social media, just how to use it. For example, it talks about Pinterest, but not how you make money doing the things you’re told to do. (At least not in great detail)The how to use it is limited to one central idea. (For example, LinkedIn is all about building a profile, but nothing about advertising)The book isn’t digital. This book would be great in a digital format wherein you could interact with it, check out the many links, etc…
A Workbook About Something I Don’t Understand – That I Can Understand! I received this book at a discount in exchange for providing unbiased feedback. I bought the 2016 version of this workbook towards the end of 2016, and never really got around to doing much with it. I was hoping the 2017 version, though, with its updates, would include working with Instagram which is where I want to focus my marketing efforts (unfortunately it didn’t). I consider myself a beginner who really resists marketing, and even with just getting on board with social media in general. This book, however, did an excellent job of guiding me through the processes. I appreciate that so much! I found most chapters were relevant and helpful, with timely prompts for review, and tools and downloadable sheets for exploring further. Invaluable! Jason McDonald’s writing is succinct, and easy to read and comprehend, putting it a notch above most other social media marketing resources out there. He seems to know just what we need, even when we might not! I still hope in the next version…
Excellent tool for understanding and taking action This is a workbook, just as it says. It’s not a broad, conceptual book, seeking to swing you to a new viewpoint from which you will then build a strategy. Nor is it a book working at the nano level, all about making those tiny tweaks which change your “metrics” by 3%. Instead, this book gives you the basic understanding of how the major social media platforms work, and how to navigate them. Jason (the author) provides valuable examples and details for context to see how each might (or might not) fit into your own work and customer interaction. And then he gives you specific tasks to help you determine what you should be focusing on, help you gather relevant, specific information, and begin building what will serve you best. Perhaps most importantly, he is super encouraging, and shapes your expectations (of the platforms and yourself in this work). His website has a huge amount of supporting pages which expand and personalize what the book provides. Very valuable…
