    Excellent Beginner or Student Book I teach introductory web design in an art college’s continuing education program and this is the book I started recommending to my students (who are often artists, writers or designers wanting to develop basic web design skills) after one of my students purchased it as a HTML/CSS reference book. This book is ideal for a complete beginner, more advanced web students may need or want something more sophisticated.Here’s why I recommend Learning Web Design to my beginner students:1) The book is in color. Most (possibly all) of the HTML and CSS reference books my students buy are in black and white. For creative, non-technical folks, this can be a challenge–wading through page after page of black and white text can be mind-numbing. The design of the book uses color to indicate key pieces of code, etc, which is very helpful for beginners.2) The book doesn’t cover everything–and doesn’t pretend to.     The perfect book for beginners! I was actually quite terrified of web design before reading this book. It really changed my mind completely. It is easy to follow with full colored pages and the author puts some real personality into teaching web design. The tutorials are to the point and they don’t drag on into boredom at all. It is especially good for those of us that are making the transition from print design to web.I absolutely love this book and I actually feel like I have accomplished a lot just by reading it. I understand a lot about XHTML and CSS and I am ready to take my learning further. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to explore web design, especially if you want to do it correctly! You will not learn any poor techniques in this reading.Do not pay attention to some of the negative reviews. Obviously you will not be an expert web designer after completing this book. That is not the point. Maybe the words “Learning” and “beginner” mentioned in the title were not…

    An excellent book to learn XHTML and CSS I was needing to upgrade my HTML website to the latest standards from the W3C, which is XHTML and CSS. I wanted to find a book which covered both. After much searching at my library I came across this book which was exactly what I needed to educate myself about the changes that were made regarding XHTML (deprecated tags and writing the code semantically) and also to learn CSS, something which is new to me. The copy at the library was falling apart, so I decided to order this so I could have it around for reference. Robbins describes things simply and provides step-by-step instructions with exercises. If you already understand HTML and how a website is put together, this book will take you to the next level.
